Cover Letter Tips for College Students

Cover Letter Tips for College StudentsCover Letter Tips for College StudentsWhen youre applying for jobs and internships, including a? well-written titelblatt letter with your application is important. Writing a compelling cover letter is a critical component of an effective job search for college students. A well thought out cover letter will show employers that you are a motivated candidate and place a high value on their employment opportunity. A quality letter will convey to employers both why you are interested in the job or internship, and how your background will enable you to excel in the position. Finally, your cover letter serves as a writing sample and will demonstrate to employers that you can communicate logically and effectively. Here are some tips to help you write the best possible cover letters. Top 10 Cover Letter Tips for College Students Carefully Research Your Target Job prior to starting to write your letter. Assess the skills, knowledge, education, experien ce and personal qualities required for success. Some of this will be evident from the job advertisement that the employer has provided. Supplement this ingestaltation by conducting informational interviews with alumni in the field. Ask them what it takes to excel in that role. Consult your colleges career office for suggestions about other resources of information about the field. Make a List of the Assets in Your Background which corresponds most closely to the requirements for the job. Your assets can be skills, coursework, knowledge, experiences, personal qualities, honors, awards, motivations or interests. Aim to compile a list of 7 - 10 reasons why the employer should hire you for that job or internship. For Each Asset Put Together a Phrase referencing how you have tapped that strength to succeed in a role, project, job or activity. For example, My persuasive skills enabled me to expand membership in the sorority by 25%. In some cases, more than one asset can be strung together w ith a particular statement of proof like Strong writing, research, and interviewing skills contributed to my success as a reporter for the school newspaper. Weaving together these phrases will form the core of your letter. In Your First Paragraph Make Sure You Reference the Specific Position or category of jobs for which you would like consideration. If anyone known to the employer (like an alum who works there) has referred you to the opportunity, make sure you mention their name towards the beginning of your letter. A tone of enthusiasm and a strong statement of interest should be reflected in your first paragraph. Some candidates will use a brief thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph to demonstrate their interest and summarize their fit. For example, My fascination with numbers combined with my strong accounting skills and mathematics minor should help me to make a solid contribution in this role. Use Short Paragraphs so that employers can quickly scan your document without being overwhelmed by large blocks of text. Try to limit paragraphs to sevenor fewer lines of text.Use Action or Skills Verbs like created, increased, calculated, analyzed, initiated, and reorganized to portray your background in a dynamic way.Employers of College Graduates Are Often Looking for Future Leaders for their organization. Include statements in your letter that showcase any successful leadership role you have played with student organizations, teams or academic groups. Showcase Any Recognition You Have Received by former employers, coaches or faculty to highlight key assets. For example My teamberaterin designated me as shift leader due to my ability to orient and motivate fellow staff members. If You Are Searching for a Position Distant From Your Campus or Home Area, Make It Seem Easy for an employer to interview you by mentioning when you might be in their area. For example, I will be visiting your area during my upcoming spring break, might we meet for an intervi ew at that time? Use a Strong Closing to Reaffirm Your High Level of Interest and belief that the position is an excellent match. For positions outside of the campus recruiting program, consider including astatement that you will contact them to follow up on your letter and explore the possibility of arranging an interview. Following these suggestions and composing a strong cover letter will show employers that you are serious about the job at hand and willing to work hard to achieve your goals. Good Resume But No Interviews It Could Be Your Name

Good Resume But No Interviews It Could Be Your NameGood Resume But No Interviews Could Be Your NameGood Resume But No Interviews It Could Be Your NameAfter generations of Georges, Williams, Johns, and Jameses, we now have a Barack in the White House. So we can all agree that anthroponym discrimination is history. Yeah, right Tell that to the woman who wrote this post on Tuesday, describing zu sich experience as a highly qualified job candidate who couldnt get an interview until she began using her middle name (Danielle) instead of her first name (Danisha) on her resume.Name discrimination is a discouraging fact, but hardly a surprise. Its just one of the many biases that can affect the hiring process. Several years ago (2003), Kendra Hamilton reported on a study in which researchers from the University of Chicago and MIT sent out 5,000 resumes with either white-sounding or black-sounding names chosen from birth records. Bottom line, they found that resumes with names like Jay, Brad, Carrie, and Kristen were 50 percent more likely to receive a callback than those with names like Keisha, Latoya, Rasheed, and Darnell.OK, thats one shocking statistic, which at first glance might seem to imply that recruiters, HR people, and hiring managers must be a bunch of filthy racists. (Tabloid journalism, anyone?) Come on. A tiny percentage may be, but overall, hiring professionals were anxious to learn how to remove these biases from the screening process once they learned of them, according to the researchers.Suffice it to say, every human being has biases. We can reject the ones were aware of in ourselves, but its tough to act on the ones that are subconscious. But sometimes name discrimination isnt about race or ethnicity or xenophobia at all. Its just laziness or fear of embarrassment. If the name on your resume looks hard to pronounce and/or isnt gender-specific, its quite plausible that a hiring manager might (consciously or not) reject it for that reason, alone.Lets sa y, for example, youre a recruiter trying to cull a stack of 100 resumes down to 10. You see one from an applicant named Taidgh Smith. Unless youre familiar with traditional Irish names, you probably would wonder ifTaidgh is a man or a woman, and how his/her name is pronounced. Tage? Taddig? (Nope, not even close.)What do you think most recruiters would do in that situation? Would they take the time to Google the name to find out its origins? Human nature being what it is, most people will take the quicker, easier route andjustskip overthe difficult resume.BTW, I have a nephew named Taidgh, so let me say for the record that its a boys name, and its pronounced roughly like Tiger without the r.If you were a job seeker facing possible name discrimination, would you switch to a more commonly known middle name, or a nickname that sounds more white or Anglo? Maybe use only your initials, or otherwise change the name on your resume? Or, would you stick with your real name, regardless? (Were talking first namesyou cant really mess with your surname.)poll9

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a c onstruction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solv ing. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leade rship roles would help drive neuheit and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average sa lary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
